Don’t let sky-high electricity bills keep you up this Winter. Use these domestic electrician-approved tips to reduce your household consumption and save money at the same time. You could end up saving more than you bargained for!
Paying bills is an unpleasant reality of adulthood. Most monthly bills for utilities like electricity and water consumption tend to increase in Winter, which can really put a strain on your already tight finances. Luckily, a high electricity bill is not inevitable, and there are a few tips and tricks you can implement to shave several dollars off of what you’d end up paying. Here are a few tips that our domestic electricians themselves use at home to reduce their electricity bills.
Switch off when you’re done
It’s convenient to keep appliances plugged in and switched on 24/7, but is the convenience worth the cost? Leaving your hairdryer plugged in for a few hours doesn’t seem like much – but when you consider all the appliances doing the same thing every day, you can see how the figure can add up. Only your fridge needs to remain on at all times. Everything else can be switched off. Most safety commissions around the world recommend this as it greatly reduces your risk of experiencing a household fire. The cords and plugs of your household appliances could have fraying or exposure damage that is not yet visible to the naked eye but able to spark.
Switch out your lightbulbs
It’s common to move in to a home and replace the lightbulbs with the same brand and type that was there before. Have you taken the time to check if these are the best possible ones you could get? LED lightbulbs are much more energy efficient and they will also last you much longer than standard bulbs, saving you on your consumption and replacement fees. It’s estimated that you’d only need one $39 LED bulb over 10 years – which is the same performance you could get from using five 42W halogen bulbs in succession, totalling $148.
Invest in insulation
If you haven’t already insulated your home, now is the time to do so. This once off investment will slash your power consumption for years to come by preventing heat loss due to leakage and drafts. It’s known to possess soundproofing qualities and eliminate problems with damp as well. Installed correctly, insulation will even keep your home cool in Summer.
